Mangawhai Heads Kitchen
Adorned with brilliant continuous woodgrain, this coastal kitchen deserves the very best from BoxMakers
All the way out in beautiful coastal Mangawhai, this BoxMakers kitchen renovation was ambitious and rewarding. With the former kitchen bring cramped, yellowed, and aging, the owners sought to undergo a total transformation. We turned this small and dreary space into a vast, fanciful kitchen filled with modern luxury.
The kitchen takes on a highly unique shape: a L-style but with an island and outward peninsula – the latter is made to double as both dining space and as a convenient station for the bay window seating area.
The body cabinetry is all finished in Bestwood Melamine’s Classic Walnut: a rich woodgrain that we carefully cut to preserve its pattern across neighbouring cuts. When you look at the handleless drawers, for example, you can see the grain effortlessly flow from top to bottom across the faces. With no handles in the way, there’s nothing to break the illusion.
Atop the cabinetry sits the glorious benchtop: Uniquartz’s Marlin White, a glossy and subtly dappled cut of shiny white. This extends not just to the island and peninsula, but also up the wall, acting as the primary splashback. The beauty of its gloss is only accentuated by the amber glow of the overhead LEDs.
Outward, the dining space is connected to the island, featuring a gorgeous rounded cut of Taj Mahal engineered stone. This choice is popular for good reason, featuring a highly nuanced design of organic depth, beautified in layers of taupe and gold veins atop an ivory-cream base. To bring the benchtops in, we called upon the use of a spider crane to gently haul them to the second level.
What really ties this kitchen together is the overhead cabinetry, with 2 rectangular glass display shelves, plus a large display case, all backlit with LEDs. This sleek glass showcase adds luxury and glow to the kitchen thanks to Nova Interior. This is similarly accentuated with the gold rod pendant light and numerous toe kick LEDs.
The tapware sports a slick copper appearance, complementing the kitchen. We installed hidden pull-out bins and storage compartments, courtesy of Blum and Enko respectively. As well, it wouldn’t be a smooth kitchen without our favoured Häfele drawer runners.
