A Statement in Walnut Song
Torbay Kitchen
Part of an award-winning home, this smoky kitchen boldly reminds of northern nature.
Touted as “a statement in streamlined design” by the Master Builders Association, BoxMakers designed the kitchen for this award-winning house in Torbay. An entrancing room built for statement and wonder, we had full control of the details we envisioned here. Thickly rich in colour and boldly confident in execution, this was a canvas in which our imagination could shine.
The primary colour we chose for this kitchen was Charred Walnut from Prime Melamine – a storied and smoky pattern that recites tales of ancient woodlands and northern continent forests. Stoked by the singed embers of flames past, these panels exude a certain resilience and strength, forged through trial and hardened through age. It makes every kitchen journey akin to wandering through a woodland half a world away.
That which embodies the texture is a single-wall plus island
configuration with prominent verticality and extruding profiles. Charred Walnut covers all the vertical cabinets, under bench units, and overhead shelves – even the island body is enshrouded by its mystifying nature. Oriented with vertical grain throughout, the tall cabinets and fridge housing live and breath forestry, thanks to its tall floor-to-ceiling presence. The rangehood is even tastefully concealed as part of the overhead cabinets in a striking blocky profile.
With much deliberation, the benchtop we chose to wash over our island and cooking area was Caesarstone’s Atlantic Salt, a thoroughly bespeckled piece that catches the eye and conspicuously integrates with the woodgrain to introduce the aura of gravelly shores. Simply gazing upon this meld of rugged naturality surrounds the senses with birdsong, sea salt, and undisturbed earth.
With appliance spaces measured to the millimetre, everything is snug – all in its right place. The song of the north is exhaled through walnut shores, and like nature itself, this kitchen will stay strong, stay beautiful, and everlasting.
